Communicating through just about any median has become easier in our modern world. You can post a video on YouTube, share a photo of your latest creative artwork on Facebook, shoot an e-mail across an ocean in a matter of seconds, or video-chat with your husband in the next room (I know this from personal experience). Even communicating with someone who speaks a foreign language has become easier with all the apps available for download and use that are quite literally at our fingertips. The question on my mind is, when is the last time you sat down and wrote a letter? Or even better, when is the last time you opened your mailbox and found a letter that caused you to rip it open with excitement; not a piece of junk mail or the bank statement, but an actual letter from a friend or family member? "snail_mail" by .girl ferment. is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 I remember in grade school (yes, this was a very long time ago) we got to choose a pen pal in a foreign country and start writing letters to them. My pen pal lived in Portugal and I remember waiting anxiously for his letters to arrive, usually a couple of times a month. I couldn’t answer them fast enough. Those letters stopped after a few years, for whatever reason, I honestly do not recall, but I remember that I cherished them way back then. Do pen pals even still exist? Believe it or not, they do! How popular are they? Your guess is as good as mine. So, has the time crunch of being all grown up, raising kids, paying bills, making sure the car is taken in for regular maintenance, etc., etc., stripped us of the simple joys of letter writing? I, for one, hope this is not true. However, I thought about it long and hard, and I believe the last time I wrote a letter was to my grandparents. It had to be over thirty years ago. They were getting up in years and I just wanted to make sure I took the time to thank them for everything they had ever done for me before it was too late, before time stole them from me. My mother later told me that the letter meant so much to them, that they kept it tucked away in their family bible. I knew how much it meant to me, but I didn’t know it would mean that much to them. So, what are you doing this afternoon? I think I’m going to sit down and write a letter. I’ve got a few grandchildren that might get a kick out of getting something in the mail.
